Our 9th grade class visited Emeryville Martial Arts last Friday for a 3 hour self-defense/anti-bullying workshop. It was a fantastic experience for everyone! The instructor was super engaging and very attentive. She got everyone (including the teachers) up and moving. The students came back energized and couldn't stop talking about all the things they'd learned. One student said, "It was the best workshop ever!" Thank you Sensei Terri! Partners P, Oakland

Adults & Teens Program
ADULT & TEEN CLASSES are offered on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturdays with periodic beginner and specialty classes. Our large 3,000-square-foot studio includes a raised padded floor and ample off-street parking. A twenty-foot ceiling easily accomodates weapons training.
The goal of the program is to develop self-discipline, determination and concentration while learning the practical skills of self defense.
Class content varies by class: target practice, heavy bag work, line drills and kata, a deliberate series of movement simulating attacks by imaginary opponents. Free-sparring is practiced with protective equipment. Mat work teaches the vital skills of rolling and falling which enhance a student's versatility in self-defense situations. Advanced students are taught a variety of weapons: Short sticks (tambos) long sticks (bo), nunchakus, sai, tonfa, spear and 3- segmented staff. Tuition begins at $120/mo.
Children's Program ages 6-12
CLASSES FOR CHILDREN combine physical fitness exercises with traditional karate techniques. Age-appropriate activities are taught and a variety of positive strategies for imparting discipline are employed. Children working with other children fosters an atmosphere of cooperation and shared learning experience. The goal of the program is to develop self-discipline, self-reliance and concentration while learning practical skills and self-respect for others.
The benefits of martial arts training for children are numerous:
Increased concentration
Grace under pressure
Increased eye-hand coordination
Increased self-determination
Positive social skills
Flexibility and body conditioning
Sense of belonging
When crime against children and by children is on the rise, it is important to find alternative activities that will channel the child's energy into positive outlets. Although children may become interested in the "sport" from television and film exposure which glorifies fighting, training will encourage the need for mutual respect and instill a sense of hard work in order to achieve goals.
Very specific techniques are taught to this age group, starting with linear movement. Students learn basic blocking, kicking, punching and rolling skills which culminate in self defense sets. Intellectual, Emotional, Social and Physical considerations influence the presentation of material. With consistent participation, advancement to purple belt is usually achieved within the first 6 months.
Classes are energetic with frequent changes in tempo. Organized play is structured to teach the basic skills of balance, quick reflexes and friendly competition. Most all, the classes are fun! From ages 6 up.
Children's Program for ages 4-5
Our “Little Samurai” program will give your child the confidence they need to enter elementary school. Emeryville Martial Arts instructors prepare your child by teaching fitness, coordination, balance, focus and teamwork in a fun and dynamic atmosphere.
Little Samurai learn basic blocking, kicking, punching, safety and rolling skills with an emphasis on coordination, fitness, focus and directional awareness. Frequent testing keeps the student motivated and excited about learning. Students test every 8 classes for a yellow stripe on their belt, culminating with a new belt when they show an ability to grasp a form. When ready, these students graduate to the youth program.
Emeryville Martial Arts also offers a variety of activities for children, including movie nights, summer camps and kid-friendly tournaments.
